KITTIE. Yup, that girl metal band that many of you learned about when the nu metal bug bit you. Thinking musically, whenever KITTIE is brought up in conversation, everyone is quick to mention their breakthrough album, Spit, and that’s it. If you did happen to follow the band after Spit, you’d be quick to learn that they’ve continued to grow more extreme on the riff side. Their latest release, The New Black, shows KITTIE at arguably their most metal.
Careful, don’t call it cute, because they’ve got a ton of ferocious tracks. “Cut Throat” for example shows KITTIE mastermind Morgan Lander at her best in both vocal delivery and instrumentation. On the vocal side, her screams have definitely solidified with her deep rasps, and also her clean singing is at its catchiest. On the instrumentation side, she’s got it down from the melodic metal assaults to even guitar soloing. There’s plenty more metal KITTIE on The New Black. “Now Or Never” shows us their thrashing abilities, while “Sorrow I Know” shows the band at their most expansive. While it may not be their most brutal, The New Black has the song structure nailed down.
I really hate all of the misconceptions of everyone saying, “Well ya know, they are pretty good for a girl band”. Well ya know what? They rock harder than you do, man. The New Black is a pretty solid metal CD, and despite a few KITTIE copy cay riffs (ex. “My Plague” = Lamb Of God - “Laid To Rest”), KITTIE is continuing to take steps forward.
