Periphery is one of the main forces in this new ‘djent’ movement, largely thanks to the trio of stringsmen who write technical, yet groovy riffs, and create haunting, yet electronic soundscapes. The band is currently on the road with Scale the Summit and Fair to Midland, and I caught up with main songwriter Misha Mansoor, and vocalist Spencer Sotelo. Check out the lengthy interview below:
Tanner Fisher: So how’s this tour been going so far?
MM: It’s been going good, man. It’s been really different…this is really our first time going on a non-metal tour, but it’s been good. We’re supporting a band that most of our fans don’t know, and most of their fans have never heard of us. That was kind of the basis behind this tour; we wanted to go out of our comfort zone, and some nights it works for us, sometimes it doesn’t, but that kind of comes with the territory, you know, it’s one of those tours. It’s very good to do these kind of tours, and it’s about time that we do something like this. We’re really stoked to be on this tour.
TF: How are Fair to Midland’s fans reaction to your sets?
MM: I would say that it varies. There are certain cities where more of our own fans come out, and there are certain cities where it’s mostly Fair to Midland’s fans. It seems like their fans have been relatively pretty accepting, or if they haven’t been, they haven’t told us to our faces. I guess the one good thing about being direct support is that you don’t get walk-outs during your set. But so far, so good. People have been pretty accepting on this tour, which is cool. It shows it was a good decision to do this tour.
TF: What do you guys do to fight off the boredom of the road? I know there’s a lot of sitting around time.
MM: There isn’t as much sitting around time as you might think, because there is always something that needs to be done. It’s just work; you’re doing stuff all day. You’ll get a little bit of down-time, and then you find something to do. Probably the most down-time you get is when you have really long drives during the day, or something.
SS: We always try to stay productive whenever there is down-time. I’ve been recording demos for new songs recently, whenever we have down-time. This is the first tour I’ve done it on, but so far, it’s been working out.
MM: Really, this has been the first time where we can do that type of thing. You know, we had a day off, and our sound guy, who at this point, is essentially a band member, brought out his rig and he’s trying to help us record on the road as much as possible. You know, stuff like that. Besides that, we just watch movies. I just watched all of Boardwalk Empire, and I wish there was more. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of it, but it’s incredible. I watch that, or I’ll watch a bunch of anime, or something like that.
TF: Do you guys have any road stories at all?
MM: [laughs]
SS: Well last night, we all got a little liquored up. It’s kind of a blur.
MM: It was an interesting night. All I’m going to say is that I didn’t do anything bad. I behaved all night long. Other than that, on the European tour, Jake [Bowen, guitar] broke his finger on the third day of tour, which sucked. We also all got deathly ill on that tour. Everyone in the band was just so miserable.
SS: It was the best tour and the worst tour at the same time.
MM: It was the hardest tour we’ve ever done, just because everyone was so sick. Otherwise, it was the best tour we’ve ever done…I don’t know, we’re pretty tame. We’re not rock stars; we don’t do rock star things at all, so unfortunately, there isn’t too much craziness going on. We’re kind of traditional in that aspect.
TF: So Misha, I know that you record bands on the side. How did you get into recording?
MM: I got into it by accident. It started when Tosin [Abasi] came to me with Animals As Leaders. He spent all of his budget on his recording, and it was a failure. He said that he was going to give up on music, and I was like “dude, you’re crazy. You’re way too good at guitar”, and I told him to come over, ask the label for a little more money and I would produce the album. We ended up writing it together, and it went from producing to much more of a collaboration. That came out really well, and after that, people started contacting me. I’ve decided that I really like that dynamic of almost being a collaborator as a producer. I pretty much set that as my rule; if I work with a band, they have to be cool with me doing that. I don’t know, I’ve just been very fortunate with that. I’ve had no shortage of work; I actually have to turn down most of it because I’m in a full-time band that is expected to come out with new material, which I have to produce, and producing other bands takes up all of your time. I’ve also got my girlfriend at home that I want to spend time with, so juggling all of that can be a mess.
TF: On top of producing albums for Animals As Leaders and Stray From the Path, you also produced an EP from some friends of mine in An Obscure Signal. How did that all come about, considering they were fairly unknown at the time?
MM: They stood outside my doorway for weeks, and they refused to eat. And they cried; Walter [Huaman, guitar] cried. He told me he would pay me any sum of money to produce the album. He actually offered me his car.
SS: Well you guys knew each other before that. He’s actually Misha’s lovechild.
MM: [laughs] He’s my son. I just couldn’t say no to my son. I had to support him. No, but really, it was very random. I saw that he had an 8-string, which I have on tour, for sale on CraigsList, and being the Jewish person that I am, because I am Jewish, and I always seek out deals, I totally lowballed him. I’m sorry Walter, but I didn’t have the money. I didn’t think that he was going to go for it, but he did. When I bought it, he was like “man, you’re Misha, from Periphery. I really dig your band”, and when I came to pick it up, we hung out for a little bit, and he mentioned that he was recording some material, and at that time I didn’t have any projects, so I was like “hey, you’re local, this will be easy…if you’re looking for someone to produce you’re material, I’d be happy to”, and that’s how it happened, and I’m glad it did, because it was a ton of fun working with those guys. They’re totally cool with my producing style, and I’m really happy with the way the tracks came out. Hopefully they are too.
TF: So what do you see in the band?
MM: They’re just a lot of foreigners, really. [laughs] A bunch of aliens, illegal aliens, hopefully from outer space. No, you know what, they kind of started off with this deathcore sound, which everyone is doing that, but I could see that they were really reaching for something else. I did a more recent song, after the EP, and they’re obviously trying break out of that.
SS: They have really good melody.
MM: Yeah, and they’re singer [Alex Mola] is really good. He’s really trying to push out of the boundaries of deathcore.
SS: I actually worked with Alex on a new track.
TF: Could you talk about “Occurrences”?
SS: “Occurrences”? Is that what it’s called now?
MM: I think the official name is “Everyone In This Band Has a Small Penis”.
SS: I just remember it being “ROFLBawlz”…
MM: Well the working title was “Occurrences”, but that’s a stupid song name, so they changed it to the far-superior “Everyone In This Band Has a Small Penis”.
SS: [laughs] No, but I really like working with Alex. He’s got a great scream. I produced his vocals, and I had him try some singing and kind of have him go out of his comfort zone. He’s really liking it, and I think he’s going to add a lot more singing into their stuff in the future.
MM: I think his biggest flaw is how fat he is. He is a fat-ass and he needs to lose some weight. Other than that, it was great working with those dudes. I think if they continue the way that they’re going, it’s going to be good. They just write really fun music. It’s stuff that would be really fun to play live; it’s really energetic, and crowds love it, obviously. We worked so hard to make everything sound good on the EP, and I told them “if you suck live, I’m going to kill you”, but they’re actually a really good live band.
TF: So let’s talk about your band’s new material. You have the Icarus Lives! EP coming out soon, so would you like to talk about that?
MM: Well it all started off with this remix idea, because we all love electronic music, and we all love good remixes. We talked to our management saying how we thought it would be cool to have a remix EP, possibly a fan contest or something, and the whole thing had to be something that we could do on the road, so it started out as that. Then we realized that we have these two songs that are basically B-sides off of our album that no one has really heard, unless you’re a super-fan, or you got the pre-orders or whatever. It’s hard to get a hold of the tracks, because they aren’t out there on a physical form, so we decided to put those on the EP. Spencer works really fast, so he had time to re-do the vocals on those, which is really cool, because it sounds even better. We’ve been touring with our new song “Frak the Gods”, and I recorded it in the little time we were home. That all came together, so we decided to put that on the EP as well. We just kept on adding and adding to it; it’s a real mish-mash of things now. It’s supposed to be just two or three songs, but now it has the remixes, the original version of “Icarus Lives!”, but now with better vocals. It has our new and improved version of “Jetpacks Was Yes!” Why? Because we can. It also has the two B-sides, “Frak the Gods”, “The New Groove”, which is a little intro track that we play live. It has both music videos that we’ve made, and the “Making Of…” video. It’s a nice little package. It’s not really another release, it’s more of a 1.5; it’s like an add-on to the first record.
SS: I don’t think that a lot of people know that the remixes on the release were going to be electronic remixes. It’s not like someone just took the tracks we recorded and remixed them.
MM: Right. It’s all electronic. We had a contest winner who did this awesome remix. I don’t even know what style of electronic music it is, but it’s just awesome. There’s this dude Zedd, who’s work I love. We contacted him, and he turned out to be a Periphery fan. Go figure, right? He’s a dude from Germany. He remixed a Skrillex song, and it’s one of my favorite electronic songs of all time now. He did sort of a club mix of “Icarus Lives!” which I’m really happy about. I was also toying around with a remix, so we decided to put it on there as well, but that’s just for laughs.
TF: The EP comes out soon right?
MM: April 19th
TF: Everyone make sure to pick that up. On top of that, you’re also working on a sophomore album…could you talk to me about that?
MM: Well that’s the stuff we are demoing right now. I have a lot of demos, obviously on my SoundClick page, and I have a lot of ideas to start with, but I only want that to be half the picture. We all really want to write new stuff, and we all want to make it more collaborative. Situations just forced our hand, where I pretty much wrote the whole first album, and I really don’t want that to be the case in the future. I would really like everyone to have input in some format. We are going to try and get as much new stuff on the album as possible, or not ruin it by putting it up online or anything. We want to keep it a surprise.
I want to make this next release a double album, having one part concept album, you know, juggernaut, really dark, moody, just heavy grooves, and very thematically linked, both musically and lyrically. The other album would be just an assortment of songs. I don’t really know how long the albums will be; it will really just narrowing it down to the best material, but even if both of these albums could fit on one, I would still have them separate, because they are separate entities. Hopefully they’ll be released as a double disc, or something like that.
TF: On top of being a part of Periphery and recording on the side, you have your project Bulb…is that just your way of putting out your little ideas, or is it its own project?
MM: Bulb is just my repository for ideas. It’s really just where I put my little ideas so I don’t forget it, because I will forget it. I’ll even forget an idea exists if I don’t have it up. I’ll peruse the SoundClick page, and be like “oh, I totally forgot about that”. So in preparation for the new album, I think we’re all going to go on the site and pick the best stuff.
TF: So what’s next after this tour?
MM: Well, the only thing we have set in stone, apart from taking time off this summer to write is Sonisphere, which is a huge UK festival where Metallica and Slipknot are headlining. That’s going to be really cool, because that’s going to be the first festival we’ve ever done, so we’re really excited. Other than that, we’re just trying to plan a headliner, a full U.S. headliner for the Fall. For that tour, we kind of made a promise to ourselves that we will be playing “Racecar” in its entirety.
SS: We just need enough time to practice it and learn the whole song.
MM: Yeah, I mean we just never practice. That’s our biggest flaw is that we never practice.
SS: The maximum amount that we practice before each tour is like three practice sessions.
MM: I don’t even remember the last time we even had three practices. For this tour, we one, thirty-minute instrumental practice, right as we were collecting our gear. We were like, that as much time as we’ve got. We had thirty minutes without Spencer once, and then we had to pack up. The tour before that, we had one practice. It was bad. We were playing some songs on that tour without any practice, basically. It’d bad, and I don’t like it.
SS: That’s why I’m trying to have everyone come out to San Diego, that way we can practice all the time, in nice weather. That’s what I want.
